What I Learned from My Experience at East Tennessee State University

Hi, I'm Takuto Kishibe.

I'm coming back to Yokohama last month after studying abroad at East Tennessee State University, in the United States. I'd been there from August 2022 to May 2023.

In studying abroad, many things happened that I didn't expect. For the first three days of studying abroad, I would be able to stay at my host family's home, but the university that I'd chosen in the US couldn't find it for me, so I had to book the place that I could stay like a hotel in first three nights. That was a hard experience but also great learning because I couldn't experience this difficult situation if I didn't study abroad.

In classes, I took 10 classes during two semesters. Taking classes was hard for me for the first one or two weeks because the type of classes was different between Japan and the US. In classes in the United States, there were many presentations and discussions, so any preparations were really hard, but I did my best in presentations and discussions all the time.

I learned while studying abroad, "Don't break my weekly routine". Many students in the United States had some routines for each other. Before going to the United States, I didn't have any routines for my daily life, but in the United States, I made routines for my daily life. For example, pieces of training in the gym is one of the most important things for me because I'm a college lacrosse player in Japan and I had to continue training to play lacrosse after studying abroad, so I decided I trained five days a week as a routine. Even if I had many assignments and was busy, I didn't stop doing my routine. This was the biggest thing that I learned in studying abroad from students in the United States.

I will never forget what I learned in the United States, and the things that I could get in the United States will last a lifetime.
